The IELTS Academic test is to be taken by students planning to go abroad for higher education.

IELTS:

International English Language Testing System, is an English proficiency test. It is the world’s most reliable and recognized English test for work, study, and immigration. Over 10,000 organizations in the world accept IELTS including educational institutions, employers, governments, immigration authorities and professional bodies. There are two IELTS tests available, ‘IELTS Academic’ and ‘IELTS General Training’. IELTS Academic computes the English test which will be fit for the academic environment. Whereas, IELTS General Training measures the English language test which is suitable for the workplace, Permanent Residency as well as social situations. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. 

IELTS Exam Guidelines

  1. IELTS test consists of 4 modules:Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
  2. The marking is in bands from 1-9. There is no pass or fail system.
  3. The test is taken on 2 separate days – one for Listening, Reading & Writing and another for Speaking.
  4. The duration of the test is 2:40 hours for LRW & 15 minutes for Speaking.
  5. The scores are valid for a period of 2 years from the date of your test.
  6. The exam fee is Rs.14,700/-, it is subject to change.
  7. The Results take 7 days for the Computer delivered test and 13 days for the Handwritten test.
  8. For taking the IELTS Exam, your minimum age should be at least 16 years and must have a valid passport.

 

IELTS test formats.


Listening

The IELTS Listening test is common for Academic & General Training modules. It consists of four parts, each containing a recording comprising ten questions. The test taker can hear the recording only once. Here three skills are tested simultaneously: Listening to the audio, reading the questions and writing the answers.

 


Reading

Reading consists of three passages in increasing order of difficulty. The type of questions are common for Academic and General Training modules, but the level of difficulty varies with Academic Reading being more difficult. Passages are taken from sources like books, journals, etc.

 


Academic Writing

Writing consists of two compulsory tasks and these must be answered as per the given instructions.

Writing Task 2:


Speaking

This test consists of three sections. It is conducted by a trained examiner face-to-face. The test is recorded for the purpose of assessment.

Part 1: Introduction - General questions on familiar topics are asked and you are expected to answer briefly.

Part 2: Cue-card - The examiner will give you a cue-card question. You will get one minute to prepare and you need to speak on it for around two minutes.

Part 3: Follow-up Discussion - The examiner asks questions based on the topic given in part 2. Your answers need to be detailed and well developed.
